"There are several types of Osstem implants. Which one is the best?"

When researching dental implants, you may come across unfamiliar terms such as SA, CA, BA, and SOI.

Hello.

This is Yonsei Gunho Dental Clinic in Jamsil.

Osstem implants can be classified into SA, CA, BA, and SOI according to their surface treatment technologies. However, no single product is the best choice for every patient.

Today, we will explain the differences between these four technologies and the important criteria for choosing an implant.

1. What are the differences between SA, CA, BA, and SOI Osstem implants?

SA, CA, BA, and SOI differ in how the implant surface is treated. These technologies have been developed with different surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and coating properties to support integration with the surrounding bone.

TypeMain Features
SACreates a microscopically rough surface through sandblasting and acid etching
CAEnhances hydrophilicity by immersing the SA surface in a calcium solution
BAApplies a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating to the SA surface
SOIHydrophilic surface technology designed with blood interaction and early blood clot formation in mind

An important concept here is osseointegration.

Osseointegration is the process by which the implant surface bonds directly with the surrounding bone. It is essential for the implant to withstand chewing forces.

Although these four surface technologies were developed with this process in mind, surface technology alone cannot determine the actual treatment duration or long-term outcomes.

For reference, TS refers to an implant system, while SA, CA, BA, and SOI refer to different surface technologies.

2. Are different Osstem implant types selected depending on jawbone conditions?

Yes. The product and surgical approach may vary depending on the amount and density of jawbone and the initial stability of the implant.

I believe it is important to examine the bone conditions before deciding which implant product to use.

The main factors to assess are:

  1. Jawbone condition: Bone width, height, and density
  2. Surrounding structures: Distance from the nerve canal or maxillary sinus
  3. Initial stability: How firmly the implant is secured in the bone immediately after placement
  4. Surgical planning: Need for bone grafting and the position of the final restoration

When necessary, CT imaging is used to examine the bone and surrounding structures in three dimensions.

Implant treatment is not simply about inserting a screw into the bone. The placement position and direction must also be planned so that the final tooth can function properly.

Even the most advanced surface technology cannot replace the process of selecting the appropriate implant position and dimensions for the patient's bone condition.

3. Are more expensive types of Osstem implants better?

A higher-priced implant is not necessarily more suitable for every patient or guaranteed to last longer.

Besides surface technology, product selection is influenced by the jawbone condition, implant position, initial stability, and the patient's overall health.

After treatment, it is also important to manage inflammation around the implant, monitor its condition through regular examinations, and assess the chewing forces applied to the restoration.

What matters more than the price or grade of a product is understanding why it is suitable for your oral condition.

Final Thoughts

Osstem's SA, CA, BA, and SOI implants differ in their surface technologies, but no single type is the best for every patient.

What I consider most important is carefully evaluating the jawbone and overall oral condition and choosing a product and surgical approach suited to those conditions.
